Coal dust is a major cause of lung disease and dust explosions in coal mining industry. The method of suppressing dust by spraying water is not effective for coal dust owing to its hydrophobic characteristics, so the surfactant is added to improve wetting ability and total dust removal efficiency. Therefore, investigating an effective dust suppression agent specifically for coal dust is important. This study evaluated the effectiveness of three types of surfactants: tritonX-100 (surfactant non-ion), sodium lauryl sulfate (surfactant anion) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (surfactant cation) for coal dust in Cam Pha’s coal mine, Quang Ninh. The results show that the addition of surfactant improved the surface tension, the degree of wetting and total dust removal efficiency and TritonX-100 is the most total dust removal efficiency.
