In this study, the authors conducted calculations and experiments on a stage separation method for the booster engine and the parachute deployment system to recover the equipment bay of a high-speed flight vehicle using pyrotechnics. The calculations determined the required amount of pyrotechnic charge and the separation mechanism by severing the retaining pins under the pressure force generated by the pyrotechnic gases. The authors carried out prototype tests on the ground and with drones, followed by full-scale tests of the separation and parachute deployment mechanisms on actual flight vehicles. The experimental results indicate that the pyrotechnic-based stage separation method is reliable and feasible for practical application.
